As a first step, I would check if Mesa builds successfully independently
of a full X build. That is,

> git clone git://anongit.freedesktop.org/git/mesa/mesa.git
> cd mesa
> ./autogen.sh --stuff
> make

There's no need to do the full X build if you're just working on Mesa.
