I don't think there is anything fundamentally wrong with your proposed
X11-specific hack.

But, I think it's unwise to implement the hack. The amount of code and hackery
needed---the implementation code in Mesa as well as the client code in the X11
app to use Mesa's hack---I predict will be more convoluted and fragile than the
analogous code for a new extension, EGL_MESA_transparent_alpha, that adds a new
value for attribute EGL_TRANSPARENT_TYPE. And, unlike an X11-specific hack,
this extension would also apply to Wayland.
