I do agree it's silly - mostly caused by the diversity of setups out
there. Dan's patches will work only when CFLAGS is empty - which is not
the case for most distros

That said, I believe there is a bit more bikesheding on this topic that
I'd like to get involved. Feel free to revert/apply either patch
