I've pushed all three patches which should resolve the issues.

Whereas "why we honor the variables in pkgconfig rather than
libdir,{exec-}prefix":
All of the cases touches used the folder mentioned in pkgconfig to construct
the full file path and dlopen the module. LD_PRELOAD and LD_LIBRARY_PATH does
not help here.

I realise it's not the recommended way (i.e. install everything in prefix) yet
it's the only sensible way to get it to work properly without relying on nasty
hacks :\
