Oh, good point, we use -1...which would become 255, which means
stateless.  That's probably okay, as it isn't a meaningful value
for these fields.  But we should probably make a #define for it.

This was just a patch I've had sitting around in a branch, FWIW,
it wasn't really going anywhere.
