hmm, I wonder how that works.. presumably you need to allocate the
buffer from *somewhere*?

yeah, I don't want to solve the "ion problem".. or let the "perfect
generic solution" get in the way of progress.  I assume to start with,
some platform configuration mechanism to configure which gbm instance
you prefer to allocate from??
