This didn't help. In any case, the problem got solved (see below).

Doing this allowed me to check that there was a missing header, so I
needed to install libwayland-dev (fwiw, Im on a system reinstalled from
scratch recently). So I guess that right now the problem is that
configure should ask for this dependency. I still had problems, but
those got solved with your fix to bug 96285.
