[Mesa-users] undefined symbols in object file

hi...
correct me if iam wrong....as per i know..when ever any C file complies to an object file.. all the symbols in the object file has to be defined right??...
but is there any situation where... the symbols remain as undefined even after the object file is being built???...:(
when i do objdump of an object file.. the symbols which my application actually needs for compiling are being built as undefined symbols...
so i just wanted to know... what might be the situation in general that can cause this problem...
