I *can* get vtk to work if I compile it for quartz and not X11, using Apple's OpenGL libraries instead of mesa, but for numerous reasons it would be very convenient if I can get it to work on X11. I've asked on the vtk and MacPorts lists, but nobody seems to know the answer. Someone suggested I try here.
