Even though its being reported as an E180v it is correctly identified by ModemManager when its queried;
# mmcli -m 0

It looks like the incorrect modem_create_bearer() is being called.....
ModemManager[890]: <debug> [946696750.177617] [mm-iface-modem-simple.c:658] connection_step(): Creating new bearer...
ModemManager[890]: <debug> [946696750.177831] [mm-broadband-modem.c:264] modem_create_bearer(): Creating Broadband bearer in broadband modem
ModemManager[890]: <debug> [946696750.184666] [mm-serial-port.c:926] mm_serial_port_open(): (ttyUSB3) device open count is 2 (open)
When I do the same with the MC8705 modem with all the same connection settings it uses a specific sierra API;
ModemManager[884]: <debug> [946685012.177984] [mm-iface-modem-simple.c:658] connection_step(): Creating new bearer...
ModemManager[884]: <debug> [946685012.178228] [sierra/mm-broadband-modem-sierra.c:473] modem_create_bearer(): Creating Sierra bearer...
ModemManager[884]: <debug> [946685012.185308] [mm-serial-port.c:926] mm_serial_port_open(): (ttyUSB3) device open count is 2 (open)
The sierra driver then successfully connects and obtains an IP address.
I have tried to enable the debug for NetworkManager but getting nothing out on stdout....
NetworkManager --log-level=DEBUG --log-domains=HW,PPP,CORE,DEVICE

Marc

With the Huawei however it can enable the modem but when I try to connect there are lots of timeouts. I have run ModemManager in debug to see if there is anything that can be deciphered from the log. (Sorry about the huge amount of info)

Also for the EM820W; it appears this could be an ECM device. Can you
grab "lsusb -v <vid>:<pid>" output for the EM820W so we can see? By
"ECM" I mean it may have a network port which should be used instead of
PPP, which could also be causing the issue seen above.

If DHCP is required in the net interface, you'll need to bring the interface up (e.g. ifup) and then run a DHCP client in the interface (e.g. dhclient). If you are using NetworkManager, it will handle all that for you, including the case where the needed setup is PPP or a static IP config.
