Maybe it's an IPv6 firewall issue?  anongit.freedesktop.org is dual
stack.  github.com is not.  Are you able to clone from other dual stack
git repos? For example
git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git
