Good news, that confirms the assumptions then.

Heh, I wouldn't be surprised. Can you post lsusb -v and MM debug logs
from that other device?
It could be that in this second device, the NCM interface goes in a
USB interface number higher than the AT ports, and so it needs
GETPORTMODE hints.
