You can modify locally your OpenWrt Makefile for ModemManager, it should have 
this at the top:

(feeds/packages/net/modemmanager)

PKG_NAME:=modemmanager
PKG_SOURCE_VERSION:=1.18.8
PKG_RELEASE:=$(AUTORELEASE)

PKG_SOURCE_PROTO:=git
PKG_SOURCE_URL:=https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/mobile-broadband/ModemManager.git

You can build the package by itself or a whole new image.
