ModemManager update

Hey Artur,

>   I am running Debian 10.2 on the remote devices that have a Sierra Wireless EM7455 modem.  Unfortunately that version of Debian shipps with an old version of MM, I thnk 11.xx.  Debian 11 is not any better, the version of MM is 14.xx.  What would be the safest way to update to a later version of MM on these remote devices?  Should I build locally in a vm and then copy all the files over and replace them?

I assume you mean 1.10.x and 1.14.x there.

The safest way would be to build an updated ModemManager .deb file
locally using the same debian version where you're targeting to
install. You'll probably need also updated libqmi and libmbim .deb
files. Then, test the upgrade process locally (installing the updated
.debs); if the WWAN connection is the only connection that gives you
access to the remote system, you want to make sure it works flawlessly
before trying in a remote system. Once the .debs are installed in the
target system, you would reboot (so that the new MM is launched) and
hope for the best :) I don't think you will lose the WWAN connection
*during* the upgrade, but better try locally first.
