Question about separate SIM card reader

No, that's not possible. The modem requires direct communication with
the SIM card; and we require direct communication with the modem.
There is by default no interaction between host and SIM card. There
are multiple USB to M.2 adapters out there with a built-in SIM card
slot, those will usually work fine.
