org.freedesktop.libmbim.Error.Status.Failure: Failure

I'm using a Quectel EM05-CE, and trying to connect via simple connect
using:

    doas mmcli -m 0 --simple-connect="pin=1234,profile-id=1"

This fails with a rather opaque error message:

    error: couldn't connect the modem: 'GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.libmbim.Error.Status.Failure: Failure'

The service itself logs:

I'm using modemmanager-1.22.0-r2 on Alpine Linux on x86_64. Any idea how
to further debug the issue?
