steps followed:

set nvidia section in xorg.conf to 
  Section "Device"
          Identifier "nouveau"
          Driver "nvidia"
          Option "FlatPanelProperties" "Scaling = Native"
  EndSection

rmmod'd the nvidia kernel
disabled all but 1 core
echo'd mmiotrace to current_tracer
started the cat on trace_pipe
ran startx & loaded openbox @ 2560x1600
echo'd "X is up" to trace_marker
changed resolution: xrandr --output default --mode 1920x1200
echo'd "resolution set to 1920x1200" to trace_marker
changed resolution: xrandr --output default --mode 2560x1600
echo'd "resolution set to 2560x1600" to trace_marker
echo'd nop into current_tracer

dump emailed
