xtrace from ut2003 splash screen - nouveau

following imirkins suggestions I got an xtrace of this problem, as attached.
Also: this problem exists not only with nouveau, but also shows on i965 (4th
gen). I assume this means the bug is more general than nouveau and should move
up the hierarchy.
