John,

Slackware-current has 1.38 as standard so I guess its also used for  
the KDE 4 build there too. I have to downgrade to boost 1.36 just to  
build openoffice. I think this is just a build dependency, not a  
runtime dependency; running ldd on all the executable products doesn't  
show any boost libs being needed. That means I can revert to 1.38 when  
the build is done. I've seen no ill effects so far. However it is  
somewhat tedious and it would be nice if some coding change were found  
to enable compilation with 1.38.
