OOo calls that Email clients using the script
/usr/lib64/ooo3/basis-link/program/senddoc
Note that Ubuntu might use another OOo installation prefix)
You might see there sections for various mail clients.
I would suggest to add there some debug messages. You need redirect them to a
temporary file because you do not see the standard output of this script. For
example, see the attached senddoc.diff.
With the diff, you might see how the mail client is called. You might try to
run the same command manually and see what happens...
