Looks useful to me too, thank you! :-)  Actually, I think that with the
git-new-workdir in place, the fetching during the ./download is not
useful any more (and even less when you don't use g-n-w) because now it
is controlled using 'bin/g pull -r', so I'd kill that from there for
good.

That way, I'd just hardcode the git-new-workdir into download.in (I
mean, test for the leading '/' there, and decide the action), so that it
can be announced appropriately, does not have to be brought in through
autoconf etc.
