I consider this a good thing.

If you intend to add DRM/KMS support to the Linux kernel, you should 
probably target a reasonably recent (i.e. current) API. Otherwise, the 
work only adds to the (future) legacy burden which the kernel already 
has to carry. The driver might get rejected just because of that.

Actively supporting old installations is generally not a good idea, but 
if it can't be avoided, the UMS drivers support them just fine.
