I thought the same thing, maybe the Dell's preferred res is 1024x768?

from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extended_Display_Identification_Data

Preferred timing mode specified in descriptor block 1. For EDID 1.3+ the
preferred timing mode is always in the first Detailed Timing Descriptor. In
that case, this bit specifies whether the preferred timing mode includes native
pixel format and refresh rate.

And in the Xorg.0.log it says:

[ 18.814] (II) CHROME(0): Printing probed modes for output VGA-1
[ 18.814] (II) CHROME(0): Modeline "1024x768"x85.0 94.50 1024 1072 1168
1376 768 769 772 808 +hsync +vsync (68.7 kHz eP)
[ 18.814] (II) CHROME(0): Modeline "1600x1200"x85.0 229.50 1600 1664 1856
2160 1200 1201 1204 1250 +hsync +vsync (106.2 kHz e)

So it's probably picking up that first 1024x768 @ 85hz resolution.

One thing I did notice in the log was:

[ 19.017] DRM memory allocation failed -6
[ 19.017] via_xv.c : viaInitVideo, Screen[0]

I don't know if that is significant or not.
