Sorry for late reply.
Yup, "VBEModes" option can be used in xorg.conf to enable VBE mode.
And for "vga=xxx" option, please see:

It can also be used for VBE setting I think.
As far as I digged into the OpenChrome code, I found right now DP/HDMI port
is not supported, especially for VX900. So do think VBE can be used before they
are supported?
