Great tip. I have a contribution to perhaps make it even better, though...

Use gtf (comes with X.org) to generate a modeline for your mode first,
telling it what refresh you want, e.g.
	gtf 1680 1050 65
It will give you a modeline and more importantly here, it will tell you
what dotclock it needs. As you said, look up dotclocks in via_mode.h,
but now you know what you're looking for. Then go and use the
modeline_dot program to give exactly the modeline you need. No need to
try lots of different dotclocks, just one or two.
