OK John (and others using the acer AL1916W) found the answer.

acer calls horizontal size "clock" and horizontal size "focus" in their
infinite wisdom... I made a B&W 2 pixel square pattern and as the auto
setup managed to show it 1:1 before messing things up I tried these very
intuitively named settings. 

"clock" is set to 6 and "focus" untouched at 49. = perfect full screen
1440x900 with the modeline set as above.
