I have tried mplayer and it works using "-vo x11" option, without this
option (using xv) mplayer crashes with the following output:

VDec: vo config request - 320 x 288 (preferred colorspace: Planar YV12)
Trying filter chain: vo
VDec: using Planar YV12 as output csp (no 0)
Movie-Aspect is 1.11:1 - prescaling to correct movie aspect.
VO Config (320x288->320x288,flags=0,'MPlayer',0x32315659)

X11 error: BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)
Type: 0, display: 0xbb3c10, resourceid: 2600001, serial: 6a
Error code: b, request code: 8e, minor code: 13

gxine seems to be a similar behavior:

The program 'gxine' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)'.
  (Details: serial 550 error_code 11 request_code 142 minor_code 19)
