The dim is what's supposed to happen... the lock up is not!
No patch, no registers writen, no lock up.

KM400 and CLE266 use a diferent register than the other chips before writing
the DAC LUT. The problem should be there, but since we have no other source
than VIA's code, I don't know how to check.

Can anyone confirm that the same happens with CLE266?

BTW, 16bpp also works on my K8M800.
