Putting Modes "1024x768 at 85" in the "Display" subsection indeed gives 85 Hz again,
with the display shifted about two centrimetres to the left -- which is good, as 
for the openchrome one I've had to push the display left quite a bit.

Grepping the logs for "1024x" plus "Modeline" gives this:
