Do you still have the old logs that contain these messages?  If so, 
please post them.  Even if no one recognizes them, it will give 
Google something to find later.

If you disabled DMA and the hangs still occurred, then it cannot be 
a DMA problem, it seems to me.

Are disk drive and VIA chip maybe on the same interrupt?  See the 
output of 'cat /proc/interrupts'.  If so, assigning a different 
interrupt in the BIOS might help.
