Yes. VBE _is_ hampering development of output support on the Unichromes.
Under some circumstances it might even be justified to call it a rot in
the driver. I think most people that have read your reasoning agrees.

However, None of the Unichrome Pro TV-out support fixes would have
happened without VBE modes, and I also believe that most people reading
this agree that wilfully hiding features from users in order to have a
greater chance of receiving hardware donations to implement proper
modesetting is not the right way to go.

An idea that came up on XDevConf was to brand hardware Xorg compliant. A
little logo goes with it. Although the idea was initially targeted at
broken KVMs that would not let through EDID information, why not include
free modesetting for all supported output devices. That would target the
hardware manufacturers instead of our own users.
