Martin,  I'd had those stripes too.  They seem to be related to some resolution settings (modelines).  I had them on 1280x1024x24 but they went away with 1280x800x24.  If you resize the video in your application, they may go away too.  I never got a handle on it.  Instead, I got a new widescreen LCD monitor and am now running 1280x800. :)
