Hi,

With respect to the blank X screen and garbled console, you may want to 
try adding these lines to xorg.conf

Option "VBEModes" "true"

- Should help with X problem

Option "VbeSaveRestore" "true"

- Should help with the garbled console when switching and/or quitting X
