Maybe you can try xubuntu 7.04 it is using one of the latest kernels:

uname -a gives me:
Linux xubuntu-ubuntu 2.6.20-15-generic #2 SMP Sun Apr 15 07:36:31 UTC
2007 i686 GNU/Linux

There are also ubuntu wikipedia pages with installation how-to's for VIA
GPU chips.
