Yes that must be it, but Option "VideoRAM" didn't help. It is recognized but later on corrected or set to 33280 again:
cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep -i ram
(**) VIA(0): VideoRAM 0kB
(**) VIA(0): Option "VideoRAM" "262144"
(==) VIA(0): Will not impose a limit on video-ram set aside for DRI.
(--) VIA(0): videoram = 33280k
