My reading of your xorg log makes me think you're using precisely the
mode it's asking for itself:

These are the same. And having just had a quick look at the VESA
spreadsheet - http://www.vesa.org/Public/CVT/CVTd6r1.xls - this is a
perfectly standard VESA CVT mode with reduced blanking, so it ought to
be absolutely perfect.
Try using your own modeline - perhaps Jelle's one, or the one from that
web page you mentioned - and call it something other than 1680x1050 e.g.
My1680x1050 so it doesn't get confused with the one the monitor's asking
for.
I'm also wondering if something in openchrome or X doesn't like reduced
blanking; I think it may have come up before.
