I have had such a line too for a while, although it consisted of all 
kinds of colours.  It went away at some point, presumably after an 
update of some software, maybe xine-lib, maybe an mpeg library, 
maybe something else.  It is not a hardware fault.

What distro and version are you on?  If you can upgrade, it is worth 
to try.
