 I tried all the suggestions above and still the same results.
 This really seems to be in the Xserver and not KDE. After the aborted
 login attempt - I can no longer switch Virtual consoles. It sort of works
 the main X window loses focus but it still there. If I then ALT-F1 it
 becomes active
 again.
