tnx john: now I've a hope! :)
I tried also this:
108.88 1280 1360 1496 1712 720 873 876 1060 -HSync +Vsync
($ gtf 1280 1024 60 -v)

but I do not get the black borders in any mode :S
maybe I've to find the right tuning :P bzzzt bzzt

anyway as soon as I enable tvout at 720p:
        Option "TVOutput" "RGB"
        Option "TVType" "720P"

the hardcoded modeline wins (I know, inside openchrome)... and I loose :(
(by now)

any further trick? at least for testing the letterbox mode w/o tvout?
regards, a.
p.s. I've a 3344 + 1625 (as my system is an epia en1200e)
