looks like a combination of mplayer/dwm - xine/dwm was fine and did not
lock up. Thanks for your help though - I'll continue to play with this as
time allows and let you know if I find anything which definitely points to
the openchrome driver, but for now I'm not sure that this is the problem.
Sorry for any inconvenience...

what I said before: the xine window is managed differently by the window
manager when switching back from fullscreen (still floating, for mplayer
it becomes one of the tiled windows (even if it wasn't before going to
fullscreen)). So I still believe this is related to some rescaling of the
video.

video before switching to full screen - it doesn't lock up. As long as you
remember to pause before changing between full screen/window, everything
is fine!

I don't know - I don't think its an mplayer issue because mplayer works
fine on 3 other computers I use, all using dwm, and one of them with a
unichrome pro chip, so I'm even using this driver. That's what made me
think it was a vx800 issue in the first place... but then why does xine
work? And don't forget, I also tried with no window manager, just X and
mplayer, and it still locked up, so it's not dwm either. I still think it
might be some kind of timing issue - that would explain why pausing the
video prevents the lock-up - but it is just the combination of vx800 - dwm
- openchrome; I can't separate these! If I get time over christmas I will
try the via drivers on i686 (if I can get them to work) - at least that
would tell if it openchrome or not.
I have mplayer set as a floating window in dwm, but the lock-up still
occurs... but I think your right, mplayers window type is different to
xine's.
