 I added Option "PanelSize" "1024x768" to my xorg.conf after reading a post
 over at launchpad. My device section now looks like this:

 Section "Device"
    Identifier "VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8378 [S3 UniChrome] Integrated
 Video"
    Driver "openchrome"
    Option "PanelSize" "1024x768"
 EndSection

 And that solved the problem. Xv output is now fine.
