 I placed a bug report with Gentoo and they said the problem is upstream

 As indicated, dri not functional with current 0.2.904 driver and when
 using driver from linux.via.com.tw,dri starts but kde desktop crashes on
 startup.  Disabling dri allows normal startup of KDE.
