 I just checked out and built r891. With no xorg.conf file, the X screen
 comes up in 1024x768. Ubuntu's Monitor Preferences dialog shows possible
 resolutions of 1024x768, 1024x600, 1024x576, 1024x512, 800x600, 720x576,
 856x480, 848x480, 800x480,720x480, and 640x480. I can switch to and from
 text-mode screens with no problems.

 This on Ubuntu 11.04 alpha-1 as of today.

 Currently there's a Ubuntu Bug 689377 in which the top and bottom panels
 usually don't appear in normal Gnome mode, but do appear in safe mode -
 this keeps me from accessing some settings except in safe mode. However
 switching to/from text screens works in non-safe and safe mode.
