That's probably what's happening; the resolution chosen will be to suit 
the external monitor rather than the laptop panel. Please send a copy of 
your /var/log/Xorg.0.log when this happened.

Odder and odder, the VGA output should be disabled if there's no monitor 
connected, so you shouldn't get a picture when you plug it in - unless 
you've set Option "ActiveDevice" "CRT" in which case you shouldn't have 
got anything on the laptop panel.
