Comment:

I have the same exact problem (computer, graphic chipset, driver version)
running Debian 6.0.2, kernel version: 2.6.32-5-686.

I've plugged in an external monitor (as suggested) and drivers seems to
work for both laptop and the external monitor.

In addiction to that I've tried to unplug the external monitor than logout
and restart Xserver: it restarts without crash.
Unless computer is halted, external monitor connection is not needed any
more and it's possible to restart Xserver safely as many time as you want.

Console Switching is possible without the screen got black (It appened
with vesa driver, even if was possible to shutdown normally by pressig
 power button: no crash).

 Xorg log file is attached.
Thanks in advance for any help regarding this strange issue.
