[Openfontlibrary] Newbie alert - How to even get started creating a font?

A real newbie question. I would like to dabble in creating my own fonts but
currently don't know the first thing about it, though that hasn't stopped me
before ;).

Where can I find some good information on things like:

- what free and open source tools are used (inkscape maybe?)
- how to get started
- how to properly create ttf files (or some other format if that isn't the
standard)
- good sources for design advice and general information

I can't seem to find anything in the few quick searches I've done.

While I know good font design is probably very very difficult and likely way
above my head, I'd still like to play around with it. Any information would
be good.

Thanks.
