It turns out the problem wasn't in simplify. There was a rounding error when 
reading in the pfb file.

(simplify made the x coordinate of the control point be non-integral and doing an 
rrcurveto meant that we didn't quite get back to the beginning, and the closepath 
added a teeny tiny spline.)
