No you just have to be a git expert, which is much easier isn't it:
git clone git://ctrl.tukaani.org/xz.git

You can grab and build the tarballs from the packages.foo.org pages
(right-hand menu) or on the upstream website...
Or motivate maintainers for your preferred environment...
