Using the black/white squares ANSI approach (vs unit on/off) I
understand that film (the media itself, not printed or projected) has
a contrast ratio of around 10,000:1 and CRTs/LCDs average about 300:1.
Really good CRTs can offer 700:1 under carefully controlled
conditions.
This means that film contrast ratios are much better than computers
can currently display.
However, all is not lost since the contrast sensitivity of the human
eye is only around 300:1.
