Yes this is usually less efficient than converting the color before
rendering, but it is not impossibly slow. 45 Mpixels is about
3-4 seconds on a modern processor (depending on the pixel depth).
Overall, not a desirable option for everyday printing though.
[It turns out that this approach is about the only practical
method of implementing PDF/X3 proofing though.]
